Tell us more about yourself.
We are Nath and Jas and we have been married for four years. Both of us have rather serious day jobs in the auditing and compliance field, so we are best described as a go-getting and pragmatic couple. In our private space, we really like doing our own thing: music, photography, reading, exercising….
What do you think about minimalism, and its growing influence on many people as design and lifestyle?
While we were staying at our rented place and researching on the renovation theme for our new house, we chanced upon the concept of minimalism. It deeply resonated with both of us and we realised that living in a small space for 3 years had quietly proven to us that we could live with less.
This effect has spilled over to almost every aspect of our lives: how we manage our purchasing desires, finances, time, etcetera. In light of our shifting beliefs, it has heightened our sensitivity to environmental issues. We believe in walking the talk and hope that this would rub off the right way with our friends and family.
Being minimalist isn’t boring; it is intentionally paving your own path and walking away from fads that do not define you as a person. By choosing well, there will definitely be a positive rippling effect on our environment.
What was your inspiration when you were setting up your home?
Pinterest and new homes we visited. From there, we had a clear idea of what we wanted for our own house.
Why did you choose The Minimalist Society?
The Minimalist Society was one of the first few websites we chanced upon while researching for our home. We are the sort of couple that believes in first impression or first love. The website had clear and concise instructions on how to go about the renovation journey, and there were sufficient photographs to confirm that this ID could do up our home in the way we envisioned. We promptly made an appointment to speak with The Minimalist Society, and the rest is history.
Were there any challenges you encountered when you were setting up your home?
Not really. We told our ID that we wanted to move in in 10 weeks and they made it happen! We also gave ourselves a 6-month lead-time to source for furniture and electrical appliances, so it all went really smoothly!
How did the ID help make your dream home possible?
Team Minimalist took the Pinterest ideas we had researched, and transformed them into a liveable space. They also gave us sound advice on many little intricacies which we were not aware of; from the choice of material to space allocation.
How was the overall experience for the renovation process?
We really couldn’t ask for a better ID. Team Minimalist is great at project management and being designers—all in one!
Enumerate your favourite spaces and rooms at home, and kindly state what makes each of them special.
We conceptualised the whole house, so we feel our heart-print in every corner of our home. If we really have to choose our favourite space, it would be our walk-in kitchen. We love how the glass allows light into the dining and living room.
What is/are your favourite furniture pieces inside your home?
The pieces we handpicked from Scanteak. These pieces were Japanese-inspired, which was perfect for our small space.
Where do you shop for furniture pieces and accessories within Singapore?
We purchased our furniture from Scanteak and Commune.
What is/are your favourite decorative pieces or accents inside your home?
It’s gotta be my cello; it adds such a classy touch to our living room!
What are the DIY projects that we can find inside your home?
Hand-made CNY and Christmas decorations!
What are your favourite things to do around your home?
Ironically, we enjoy house-keeping very much. Otherwise, we really like to chill at home.
What makes your house special?
There are many versions of minimalism, but we like our own spin of minimalism with a pop of grey and blue.
