3 THINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN'T BUY
In a world where consumerism is so prevalent, we often buy things because of societal norms, and not because we actually need it. Here are some items that you probably shouldn’t be buying.
1. Watches and Clocks
Before the age of smartphones, people used their watches and clocks to tell the time. But how many of us still do that now? When we are on the go, people use their smartphones to tell the time, making watches more of a fashion accessory rather than an actual time-telling device. When people are at home, many of their home appliances and gadgets are able to tell the time too, making a clock just a home decor item.
2. Newspapers and Magazines
Same as watches and clocks, these items have been made redundant by technology. People are receiving news through their smartphones as news sites have shifted online to reach their readers. So why do you still need these physical copies? It is not environmentally friendly and takes up unnecessary space in your home too.
3. Festive Home Decor
When it comes to special occasions such as Christmas and Chinese New Year, people enjoy decorating their houses in festive decor to “feel the spirit” a bit more. While this may be a tradition in some households, for others it is more of an obligation because of societal norms. This festive decor could only be used once a year, and the rest of the time it just collects dust in the back of an old closet. Examples of these include Christmas trees and Chinese New Year Wall Decor. Perhaps instead of buying occasion-specific decor items, you could buy decor that may be displayed all year round in a colour that may also represent a special occasion, such as red representing Chinese New Year. This way, you could display the decor pieces throughout the year and at the same time without it being associated with these special occasions.
We are not saying that everyone should not be buying these things, but rather you should think critically and evaluate your lifestyle to see if you actually need these items, instead of just blindly buying them.
